Multi-state lotteries are run jointly across many US states, which pools ticket sales into much bigger jackpots than any single state could offer. The best-known are Powerball and Mega Millions, whose jackpots regularly climb into the hundreds of millions. Because they share the same drawing nationwide, the winning numbers are identical in every participating state — only the local tax treatment differs.
