The Illinois Lottery was established on July 1, 1974. Back then Illinois was the only state lottery to have its drawings televised nationwide. Initially, the lottery sold “passive” games through weekly drawings. In 1982, the Illinois Lottery introduced Pick 4, with drawings held only on Tuesdays and Fridays. With the introduction of Pick 4, the sales of the Daily Games increased by 52% over the 1981 sales. On March 9, 1985, the Pick 4 drawings were increased to seven days per week. Since then, the Illinois Pick 4 plus FIREBALL, has been producing a notable amount of winners.

About The Commission

The State Lottery Commission of Illinois is operated by Camelot Illinois. Northstar Lottery Group became the Lottery’s first private manager on July 1, 2011. With his assistance, it became the first US lottery to sell tickets on March 25, 2012.

The lottery profits initially went to State's General Revenue Fund, until legislation was passed in 1985 earmarking profits for the Common School Fund, which is still the Lottery's major benefactor. In 2010, the Lottery began contributing to the Capitol Projects Fund, which helps build and renovate state roads and bridges.
