The Iowa Lottery came into existence in 1985. The bill legalizing the lottery was passed in April 1985. The official sale of lottery tickets began on August 22, 1985, with a grand celebration at the Iowa State Fair. Since its establishment, the players have won more than $4.5 billion in prizes, while the lottery has contributed more than $2 billion for the state programs to benefit the Iowans. The proceeds of the Iowa lottery support the state’s veterans and their family, support Iowa Public Safety Survivor Benefits Fund, contribute to the State General Fund, and backs the Vision Iowa Program. Since the lottery has been producing innumerable winners with games like Mega Millions, Powerball, Pick 3, Pick 4, Lucky For Life, and Lotto America.

About The Commission

The Iowa Lottery's started in 1985 and its profits have been used to make Iowa a better place to live, work, and raise a family. Matt Strawn has been serving as the CEO of the Iowa Lottery since January 2019.

The Iowa Lottery Board is made up of five Iowa citizens appointed by the governor, and the State Treasurer serves as an ex-officio member of the board. The board oversees the lottery and its operations.
