In 1972, the people of Maryland approved the constitutional amendment to create a government-run lottery. The Maryland Lottery was established on January 2, 1973. The Lottery is an independent agency of the Maryland government. Since its establishment, the lottery has contributed more than $16 billion in revenue to the State and more than $25.6 billion in prizes to lottery players. The Maryland Lottery aims to generate revenue to support good causes in Maryland, including public health, education, public safety, and the environment.
Maryland Lottery introduced Pick 3 in July 1976 and since then the game has produced a considerable number of winners.

About The Commission

The Maryland Lottery was formed as a State Lottery Agency by constitutional amendment 1972. The Commission oversees lottery and gaming operations and regulations. Seven members constitute the Commission and they are appointed to four-year terms by the Governor with Senate advice and consent.

The mission of the Maryland Lottery is to generate revenue to support good causes in Maryland, including public health, education, public safety, and the environment.
