History

The Illinois Lottery was established on July 1, 1974. Back then Illinois was the only state lottery to have its drawings televised nationwide. Initially, the lottery sold “passive” games through weekly drawings.

Historically, Lotto began on February 19, 1983, as just a Saturday game with 6 of 40 numbers being drawn. In May 1984 the game matrix was changed to 6/44. It was on December 1, 1985, that the game introduced Advance Play. After multiple alterations in the years 1986, 1987, 1988, 1990, and 1998. In 1999, the game underwent its final changes, including the change in-game matrix from 6/48 to 6/52, added a fourth prize of $3, for matching three numbers and the jackpot again became annuitized, but with a cash option. Since its introduction, the game has produced a number of lotto multi-millionaires and is continuously working on producing more winners in the future and investing a share of the proceedings for the betterment of the state.
