The official sale of lottery tickets began on August 22, 1985, with a grand celebration at the Iowa State Fair. Since the lottery’s establishment, the players have won more than $4.5 billion in prizes, while the lottery has contributed more than $2 billion for the state programs to benefit the Iowans. The proceeds of the Iowa lottery support the state’s veterans and their family, support Iowa Public Safety Survivor Benefits Fund, contribute to the State General Fund, and backs the Vision Iowa Program.
