Maryland Lottery was established on January 2, 1973, as a result of popular voting in 1972. The mission of the Maryland Lottery and Gaming Control Agency is to generate revenue to support good causes in Maryland including public health, safety, education, human resources, and environmental initiatives. Since its establishment, the lottery has contributed over $16 billion in revenue to the State and more than $25.6 billion to lottery players. Around 60% of sales are returned to players, 30% is used for state-funded programs, 7% is used for commissions to retailers, and 3% is given to the lottery for operating expenses.
