History
Pennsylvania Lottery was created by the Pennsylvania General Assembly on August 26, 1971, two months later after Henry Kaplan was appointed as the first executive director of the lottery. The Pennsylvania Lottery sold its first lottery ticket on March 7, 1972, and drew its first official lottery numbers on March 15, 1972.
The Pennsylvania State Lottery is the only lottery that allocates its proceeds to programs that benefit older residents. The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania governs the state lottery, wherein it executes and regulates the operational power over the lottery. Since its establishment, the lottery has contributed more than $29 billion to programs like low-cost prescription assistance, senior centers and meals, care services, and property tax rebates.
Pennsylvania Lottery introduced Cash 5 on April 23, 1992, as the longest-running jackpot game. Originally players had to select 5 numbers from a pool of 1 to 39, for a jackpot starting at $100,000, with weekly draws, which was changed to nightly drawings in 1988. In February 2008, Pennsylvania Lottery made the first update in Cash 5, since its establishment in 1922, with an increase in jackpot amount from $100,000 to $125,000, and an increase in number pool from 39 to 43. Since its creation, Cash 5 is known to offer a number of lottery winners every day for a really exciting payout structure.
