History

The voters of West Virginia approved the Lottery Amendment to the State Constitution on November 6, 1984, by a total vote of 67% for the amendment. The Lottery Act was passed by West Virginia Legislature in April 1985. The Lottery Act was signed into law in May by Governor Arch A. Moore, Jr. Since its establishment, the Lottery has generated more than $3 billion in lottery prizes and over $9 billion in proceeds that have helped public education, senior services, and the state’s tourism industry.
