The Powerball Payouts

With the purchase of each Powerball ticket, a massive 50% goes towards prizes (20% into the jackpot pool, the other 30% towards other prizes). The leftover 50%, goes to the state where the ticket was bought to cover operating costs, retailer costs and, of course, good causes.

The Payouts are awarded on the basis of how many numbers you have matched. The golden rule that prevails here is that the more numbers matched the bigger is the prize. The biggest decision you have to make in the lottery is to choose your Powerball number. Matching a Powerball along with two regular numbers will pave you to the path of winning tiers. The prize structure of Powerball below can help you calculate the odds of winning the lottery:

Match Prize Odds (1 in) Payback Rates
5+1 $10,000,000 292,201,338 3%

3 $20 579.76 3%

0+1(Powerball Only) $7 38.32 18%

The Power Play

You can opt for the Power Play option for an additional $1 per play. The Power Play acts as a multiplier of prizes in a similar way to Megaplier of the Mega Millions. This add-on wager multiplies winnings earned by matching just one number right through to matching five numbers - turning the $1,000,000 prize into a $2,000,000 prize. Players who play with the Power Play option can see their prize money multiplied by two, three, four, five or even ten times the normal amount, depending on the multiplier for that draw. The 10x multiplier of the Power Play will multiply your prize only when the jackpot is below $150 million and for prizes that are $50,000 or less.

For example, you have won $100 with the Power Play - 5x, then your winnings will be multiplied by 5 and you will receive $500.

The table below demonstrates how the Power Play option affects each prize.
