Iowa Couple Misses Powerball Deadline To Cash $100,000 Ticket

A couple hailing from Iowa, who held a winning Powerball lottery ticket worth $100,000 missed the deadline to claim after discovering the winning ticket in their car months later. After returning from a tour in Afghanistan in a wheelchair, Bradly Hanawalt of Des Moines never thought that luck was on his side. While going through his wife's car, he found a Powerball ticket worth $100,000 and instantly thought his luck had changed.

However, the feeling did not last much. This good fortune faded as quickly as it came when they learned about the deadline to encash the ticket that expired months before. Bradly's wife, Carla had purchased the winning ticket at the QuikTrip convenience store on Fleur Drive in Des Moines for the drawing on November 27, 2019. The ticket had matched four white balls to win a $50,000 prize, but she had also added the Power Play option to double her winnings to $100,000.

The winning numbers for the Powerball drawings were 15, 26, 37, 53, 55, and Powerball 21. The Power Play number for the game was 2. The deadline for Bradly and Carla's ticket was until 4:00 pm on November 30, 2020, to claim the prize at one of the Iowa Lottery's offices, but they couldn't cash the ticket until February 8, 2021.

The winners exclaimed that it didn't hurt much because we didn't have that money before, but the money won could help them with their family bills and everything else as they had 6 daughters to take care of. The unlucky winner also mentioned that Carla had been sick from COVID-19 in November and requested a deadline extension from the Lottery because of it. Being sympathetic to the couple's situation the Lottery said that they could not grant claims extensions to players since they were operational during the pandemic. A week before the ticket expired, the Iowa Lottery published a press release urging players in Des Moines to check their tickets. While there's nothing that the family can change now, Bradly said, he's looking on the bright side and appreciating all that he has.

This is why we urge lottery players to check their tickets from time to time, or just hop on to The Lottery Lab - Lottery Results to confirm the winning numbers in a few simple clicks without visiting the lottery store.
