The Multi-State Lottery Game, Powerball Turns 30, With Jackpot Crossing Over $400 Million

One of the most popular and the largest draw-based lottery game in the United States, Powerball, turned 30, the previous week. A number of state lotteries across the country celebrated the game’s 30th anniversary by throwing light on some of the biggest local winners in the game’s history.

Happy Birthday to Powerball, said the North Carolina Lottery Executive Director Mark Michalko.

He stated that no game to date has produced bigger dreams in North Carolina than the Powerball game. Also, the players have won jackpots as high as $344 million, and the biggest win so far has been $1 billion, all raised for education.

It was on April 19, 1992, precisely 30 years ago that the tickets for Powerball went on sale for the very first time. And the first drawing for the lottery took place on April 22, 1992.

Since then it has created 1.75 billion prize winners and has generated more than $27 billion for public services and programs throughout the United States.

Powerball Product Group Chair and Missouri Lottery Executive Director May Scheve Reardon stated in a press release, "for 30 years, Powerball has been America's top jackpot game. Every Powerball ticket purchased has raised money to benefit the good causes, supported by various U.S. lotteries such as education, environmental conversation, veterans, and senior citizens.

As per the current stats, Powerball holds the record for producing some of the largest jackpot winners in the history of lotteries, including the world record of $1.586 billion jackpot won in January 2016, which was split between California, Florida, and Tennessee.

Moreover, over the last three decades, there has been a total of 393 jackpot-winning tickets in the game, along with 470 $2 million winning tickets and 2,424 $1 million winning tickets. Overall the game has paid out $25 billion for jackpot prizes and $23 billion for lower-tier cash prizes.

As far as the year 2022 is concerned, the Powerball jackpot has been won twice with two tickets in California and Wisconsin splitting the $632.6 million prize on January 5 and one ticket in Connecticut that had hit the jackpot worth $185.3 million on February 14.

Also in August 2021, the game also added its third draw that would take place on Monday and the Double Play feature. All adding up to help players win millions with each chance given!
